Josephshofer is a small, 4-hectare monopole vineyard acquired by the Kesselstatt counts in 1858. The site of a former monastery, the steeply sloped vineyard is situated on the river directly between the larger Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Domprobst sites. The heavy soils over Devonian slate yield a textured, spicy, and peach-inflected profile. The feinherb designation indicates a somewhat drier finished wine than a typical Kabinett. Â
Clean and well balanced, it shows just enough residual sugar to offset its lively acidity. Substantial on the palate with lots of slatey minerality offering a savoury counterpart to the ripe fruit notes. It is luscious and aromatic with elements of candied grapefruit, peach, ginger and dried apricot, drink now with air or age for another 10 years!
