750ml

A final blend of 91% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the very deep garnet-purple colored 2017 la Fleur-Petrus has quite an earthy nose, sporting notions of black soil, mossy bark and truffles over a core of cassis, mulberries and plum preserves plus hints of espresso, anise and peppercorns. Medium to full-bodied, firm, grainy and with great freshness, the sturdy frame supports generous black and blue fruits with earthy accents and fantastic length.

Wine Profile

awards

A powerful, muscular wine fully representing the slightly more masculine style that the Christian Moueix stable has exhibited over the past few years. This is an estate that has been fascinating to watch develop, as it sets to establish its own identity in the post-Petrus era on this side of the family. Ambitious and well-constructed, it has clear ageing potential. There was no frost here, so they were able to benefit from an early-budding year. That kick of Petit Verdot gives a clear shot of dark, exotic spices through the finish - Christian Moueix was responsible for its addition a few years ago. An excellent La Fleur Pétrus, one of the wines of the vintage in Pomerol.

other notes

Named for its position between Chateau Petrus and Chateau La Fleur, Chateau La Fleur-Petrus is an historic estate dating back to the 18th century with a long reputation for producing great wines. In 1950, Chateau La Fleur-Petrus became Jean-Pierre Moueix' first vineyard purchase. His son Christian has overseen the re-ascension of this estate to the top of Pomerol's hierarchy, first in his incredibly meticulous vineyard care, and then through the addition of an important parcel in the 1990s.

Today the estate is composed 90% of Merlot with an average vine age of 30 years and 10% of Cabernet Franc with an average vine age of 50 years. Christian Moueix' obsessive work in the vineyard focuses on sap flow and the treatment of each vine individually. In the cellar, vinifications are extremely precise but quite traditional: vinification in cement and stainless steel, aging in oak barriques for 18-22 months (usually 50% new oak).

Christian Moueix has managed a number of his family’s estates for over thirty years, developing important properties in Pomerol over the course of that time, and founded the Dominus estate in California. He has always followed his own instincts and analyses from early on, when he was the first winemaker in Bordeaux to green harvest, straight through to today, as he continues to make wines that retain elegance and balance and, most importantly, strive to reflect their terroir above all.

ratings

Fleshy and solid in feel, delivering warm plum and blackberry confiture notes inlaid with ample tobacco and licorice hints. There's a strong graphite streak through the finish, with admirable grip for the vintage.

tasting notes

This fine wine from the central plateau of Pomerol has a beautifully structured character, rich in layers of tannins and black fruits. Juicy and full in weight, it has power and density and great aging potential.
