Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
James Suckling - "This has crazy concentration of stone, blueberry and blackberry character. Full body, yet racy and toned. Exciting. Pushing the envelope here. Barrel Sample: 94-95 points.
Ratings
Wine Spectator - "A toasty, fleshy style, with a broad swath of fig and blackberry paste flavors melded with dark ganache accents and a heavy tobacco note. A bit obvious in style, but this has range and length. Barrel Sample: 89-92 points"
Awards
The Wine Advocate - "The 2015 La Dominique is a blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that was picked between September 18 and October 7 at 38 hectoliters per hectare; 10% went through "vinification intégrale" and then it was matured in 60% new oak. It has a very deep inky color. The bouquet is well-defined but broody at the moment, with blackcurrant, blueberry and even graphite scents, the latter deriving from the Cabernet component of the blend. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin on the entry. This errs towards black rather than red fruit, specifically black cherries and a touch of boysenberry. There is quite a rigid structure packed in behind the fruit, the spicy finish showing just a little more finesse than recent vintages. Although, I feel there is still some way to go in terms of reaching the full potential of the vineyard. Barrel Sample: 90-92 points"
Winemaker Notes
With its deep and shiny color, Chateau La Dominique brings together the generosity of a Saint Emilion and the typicity of a Pomerol. The nose is intense, characterized by seducing aromas of ripe fruits and subtle spicy notes. In most vintages, you will find truffle and licorice notes, complemented by peppery and woody aromas. With a sharp attack, it is fleshy and round, with silky and precise tannins. The finish is long and full and leaves you with a pleasant feeling of bliss. Aimed to be aged in most vintages, but can also be appreciated during its early years.
Other Notes
Driven by enthusiasm and the spirit of enterprise, in 1969 Clément Fayat acquired Château La Dominique, an estate offering a high class terroir, located on the western side of the Saint-Emilion appellation. Respect for the soil in order to bring out its potential at its best, disciplined and careful work in the vines throughout their life-cycle, greatest care for the grapes from their ripening until the crucial period of fermentation, and finally the closest attention that is paid during the ageing process and the bottling. The winery has 23 hectares and the soils are 25% deep gravel, 75% old sand mixes with gravel over a clay sub-layer. The vines average 30 years of age.
